HistoryOn June
18th, 1981, our St. Charles CWL Council became a reality. 23 women became Charter Members at
the organizational meeting held at Bishop Savaryn School. Our enthusiastic members decided
that A Miraculous Medal would be presented to each newly baptized baby in
the Parish. In 1983 they
sewed all the white altar servers’ gowns. Our new church was officially opened on November 4, 1981. Its location was 154 Avenue and 113 Street. Our members hosted the luncheon for the occasion. For the 5th anniversary of St. Charles Council, a CWL banner was purchased and then blessed at a special Mass. Our first Tea and Bazaar was held at St. Timothy’s School in 1986. It was a great success and became an annual event. In 1987, a funeral lunch committee was created to offer a service to our parishioners. This service is still ongoing today. Our CWL sashes were sewn in 1992 and are worn by our members at the Installation of Officers, as well as when we form an Honour Guard at deceased members’ funerals. Our Council
relocated to a new home at 17511 - 112 Street in 1995. Our new facility has an activity
centre and large commercial kitchen as well as several meeting rooms. Sales of baking, perogies, cabbage
rolls, and tourtieres, etc., have helped to pay for the church’s
expenses. |
| In
1996, the new kitchen was creatively equipped by organizing a Parish
kitchen shower. A variety of
kitchen necessities were put on display, purchased by Parish members who,
in turn, donated the items to our kitchen. Many other fundraising projects
were done to pay for the kitchen such as the publishing of a Parish
cookbook. | |
| Catering
teams were organized, as our activity centre was booked for dances,
anniversaries and weddings. We served 800 people for each of the
graduation teas of Archbishop O’Leary and Archbishop MacDonald High
Schools. We hosted the Diocesan Mid Winter Meeting in 1997, 2001 and
2005 as well the Zone 9 Meeting in 1998 and 2004. In 1997, our
Council decided to have an old fashioned Harvest Dinner complete with
turkey, garden vegetables and of course, many, many pies. The
proceeds went to our church debt retirement.
| As
a kick off to our membership drive in 1998, we treated our members to a
Communion Breakfast with a guest speaker, which in turn soared our total
membership to 130 members. That year, our Council decided to
purchase the CWL flag. | |
| Our
CWL works collaboratively with all parish ministries to promote community
and friendship in our parish.
We are truly Sisters in the League as we continue to support one
another through happy times as well as difficult ones. St. Charles Council looks forward
to the continued growth of our membership, both in spirit and in numbers
as we serve the People of God.
To a member, the League is a gift of faith, friendship, leadership
development, support and affirmation.
